Which is your university’s biggest area of strength?
The university has invested in major research initiatives, bringing together diverse expertise that transcends traditional discipline boundaries. In partnership with industry, government, and foundations, these focus areas address emerging challenges and opportunities that seek to improve the human condition and create a better world for all. These strategically focused areas are the Virginia Tech Research Frontiers.
The Artificial Intelligence Frontier harnesses artificial intelligence for intelligence augmentation. The Health Frontier focuses on whole health. The Security Frontier produces innovations that foster secure and resilient communities. And the Quantum Frontier accelerates the integration of quantum technology across society.
Why is international cooperation important for your university?
Our role as a global land-grant university is to make education and research portable, so that our students and faculty members can work and learn anywhere in the world. We enhance the impact of our research by supporting scholarship, promoting collaboration across disciplines, and lowering the barriers to global partnerships.
Virginia Tech currently has 39 academic partners in 17 countries and has worked on projects in 43 countries. Our outreach mission includes sharing the best of Virginia by working alongside communities across the world.
Why is your affiliation with SIREUS important for your university?
As a global university, our mission is well aligned with the mission of SIREUS. Through this affiliation, we seek to strengthen and expand ties between Virginia Tech and Swedish researchers and students.
What is the most important aspect to achieve from the SIREUS Affiliation program?
To build strong partnerships with Swedish universities and industry that support collaborative research, researcher exchanges, experiential learning, and innovation.

What can you tell us about life outside your university?
Virginia Tech has a 2,600-acre main campus
in Blacksburg, a picturesque university town in the southwest of Virginia. The university also has a significant presence in Northern Virginia, next to Washington DC, in an area of the state that is home to a host of technology companies. Combined, these two locations offer a wide range of cultural opportunities, from nature hikes to unparalleled museums and a lively entertainment scene.
