What is your university all about?

What is your university all about? Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 46 000 students and more than 8 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. The University has a distinctly international profile with students and staff from over 130 countries on campus and hundreds of partner universities in around 70 countries. With all Ph.D. studies, as well as 140 International Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs taught fully in English, Lund is the most popular university in Sweden for international applicants and offers one of the broadest ranges of programs and courses in Scandinavia. One of our strengths is our unique disciplinary range and our ability to generate boundary-crossing collaboration. Lund University has a long-standing reputation for transformative, world-class research.

Why is international cooperation important for your university?

Lund University's vision is to be a world-class university that works to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition. This cannot be achieved without an international perspective and global engagement. International collaboration is essential for solving the global challenges the world is facing today.

It is one of the University’s top priorities to have strategically supported international partnerships and take an active part in influential international networks, as well as to be attractive to international students and staff and offer good opportunities for international mobility. Internationalization is an important tool for strengthening the quality of education and research and we strongly believe that benchmarking with others is a key component of our own development.

Lund is the only Swedish university to be a member of the prestigious international research networks League of European Universities (LERU) and Universitas 21 (U21).

Why is your involvement with SIREUS important for your university?

Lund University strives to continuously develop and grow an internationally-oriented and leading university. In the University’s Strategic Plan, internationalization is one of the priority areas. Lund University is currently making specific efforts, through its Global Dynamic Engagement initiative, to strengthen its position in research, education, collaboration, and innovation in North America. As a part of this initiative, Lund University will work to extend its collaboration to priority partners in the USA, with the goal of further strengthening the quality of the University’s education, research, and administration. Lund University has strong ties with the USA and is already in partnership with several leading universities. We currently have 40 student exchange agreements in the USA, several of which have been ongoing for decades. Lund University is also a popular study destination for degree-seeking students in the USA and we see a growing interest among American students in the wide range of programs that Lund University offers, both a Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. We see that there is potential to create even more awareness in the USA of the opportunities at Lund University for students who wish to enhance their careers by taking part in the unique study experience and international environment that the University offers.

The SIREUS project is in line with Lund University’s goals and strategies in the USA and we strongly believe that a common effort with other Swedish universities, companies, and organizations has great potential to highlight mutual benefits for collaboration, as well as create awareness of Sweden as a study and research destination. Another priority area in the Strategic Plan for Lund University is to further develop and facilitate an active collaboration with the public sector, cultural sector, community life, business and industry, and alumni. This is also directly in line with the work within SIREUS project.

What is the most important aspect of the SIREUS project for your university?

The SIREUS project involves collaboration, activities, and recruitment events that will showcase Sweden and Lund University as a study and research destination and create the conditions for further student and research mobility between Sweden/Lund University and the USA.

The project will also support networking between Lund University and potential partners in the USA, which in turn may lead to extended collaboration, as well as direct opportunities for students and staff in the form of internships, common projects, and more.

As this is in line with Lund University’s goals and strategies mentioned above, these are very important aspects of the SIREUS project for us.

What can you tell us about life outside your university?

The University has three campuses, all located in Southern Sweden in the cities of Lund, Malmö, and Helsingborg. The main campus city of Lund is a small, charming Medieval town that is heavily influenced by the University and offers everything from research facilities and science parks, to global companies and local start-ups, as well as a range of cultural events, shops, international restaurants, and cafés. The students at Lund University comprise a large part of the population of the city and consequently have a significant impact on it and contribute to the youthful, laid-back atmosphere. In addition to the city life in the three campus towns, the region of Scania offers a wide range of cultural attractions and outdoor activities. Nature is always nearby and invites you to enjoy beach life, hiking, cycling, and much more. Just across the bridge and less than an hour’s train ride from Lund, you find Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, with its big-city life and international airport.
